- Real World Connection: Many of the measurement tools we use in daily life have scales. In the kitchen, the bathroom, the car and much more. Most of the scales are divided into equal parts like the number lines we have been learning. Have your child find two examples of scales in their home. Have your child write a description of each scale, including what the scale measures, the unit of measurement, and how much space there is between each mark.
- Compare Recipes: Most recipes require some ingredients to be measured in fractional amounts. Have your child find two recipes for the same food and compare the amounts of each ingredient. For example, take two cookie recipes and compare which has more sugar, flour, etc.
- Make Money Count: We have been looking at money and how it can be looked at as a decimal (a penny is 1/100 of a dollar). Have students make a chart that shows equivalent fraction values for 50 pennies, 10 nickels, 5 dimes, and 2 quarters. The students' chart should show how these amounts relate to a dollar using fractions.
